CWLP boat safety patrol hitting Lake Springfield for Memorial Day weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Springfield’s City Water, Light and Power is offering boaters a chance to ensure their safety this weekend as they hit Lake Springfield for Memorial Day weekend.

CWLP officials said their Lake Security Patrol will be conducting courtesy safety checks at various boat launching spots around the lake. Patrol members will perform a quick review for required safety equipment and watercraft registrations, and they will also be available to answer questions and give boaters safety tips.

State officials urge boating safety ahead of Memorial Day

All watercraft used, kept or stored on Lake Springfield are required to be registered and licensed in accordance with City of Springfield and State of Illinois requirements. Rules also require that all boats be equipped with a paddle or oar, a pump or bailer, an anchor with at least 50 feet of line and at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device per person

Motorboats must also have a Coast Guard-approved fire extinguisher, a horn or whistle and a working lighting system. Their batteries must be secured and covered with nonconductive shielding.

The Lake Security Patrol will also be available for safety checks at any other time at their Licensing Station, located at the east end of Vachel Lindsay Bridge off Long Bay Drive. Its seasonal phone number is 217-786-4075.
