CWEP proposes wage and rate increase

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The director of Carthage Water and Electric presented a proposed wage and rate increase to the budget committee Wednesday night.

CWEP is asking for an 11 percent wage bump in the 2024-2025 budget proposal. The Budget Ways and Means Committee said they will recommend at least a 3.7 percent rate increase for utility service, passing along some of the wage increase to city residents.

CWEP’s General Manager Chuck Bryant says the salary study is not yet complete but he hopes it will be done in the next couple of weeks. The wage increase needs to be approved by the CWEP board and the city council.

Last summer, the mayor fired the entire CWEP board over the salary issue. Hundreds of residents showed up to city council meetings expressing a desire to get the situation worked out. The board members were reinstated, but this battle is part of the reason some city council members are at war with the city administration.

Before increases can be approved, CWEP must submit its salary study and give proper disclosure to city administrators.
