Though CVS permanently closed stores in Florida in 2023, at least six new locations will open here in 2024. Here's what we know.

Is CVS still planning to close stores?

In November 2021, the company announced plans to close 900 CVS stores, or 300 per year for the next three years, as the company shifts away from retail toward health care services.

The move came after the company, struggling to compete with Amazon's online pharmacy, acquired health insurance benefits manager Aetna in 2018 and repositioned certain stores as "HealthHub" locations, with a focus on clinical services and health products, a 2023 Des Moines Register story states.

Which CVS stores were permanently closed?

A complete list of the stores that may be up for closure is not available, but here's a list of some of the locations that were shuttered in 2023:

  • CVS Pharmacy, 153 Central Ave., Albany, New York, closed in January 2023, according to the Times Union.

  • CVS Pharmacy, 1100 4th St. SW, Washington, D.C., closed Feb. 2, 2023, an article on the-sun.com states.

  • CVS Pharmacy, 400 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, D.C., closed Feb. 27, 2023, according to the Sun.

  • CVS, 215 Euclid Ave., Des Moines, Iowa, closed March 1, 2023, after 10 years in business, according to the Des Moines Register.

  • CVS Pharmacy, Houston, Missouri, closed March 7, 2023, according to a story in The Sun.

Where will the new CVS stores in Florida be located?

On Oct. 30, 2023, construction continued on a CVS location near Viera Boulevard and the diverging diamond on I-95. A CVS spokesperson said the Borrows West store in Viera is one of five scheduled to open in Florida in 2024.

"Our planned Viera location is among a half dozen we’re planning to open in Florida in the next six months, and we look forward to welcoming patients and customers upon opening," Matt Blanchette, a senior manager for retail communications for CVS Pharmacy, told USA TODAY Network-Florida via email this week. "While I don’t have specific opening dates, I can tell you we’re planning two locations in Miami, Viera, Riverview and Wildwood."

Where will CVS open in Viera, Florida?

As of Oct. 30, 2023, construction crews were in place near Viera Boulevard and Lake Andrew Drive at Borrows West for one of two CVS stores planned in Viera.

Eva Rey, vice president of community management and communications at The Viera Co., describes Borrows West Park as a "passive linear park" that is being built around a man-made lake on a 34-acre site with a relaxing vibe. The park won't be for kids, as there will be no playgrounds, baseball fields or basketball courts. But it will have oversized swings and chairs.

Where will CVS open in Miami, Florida?

Blanchette, CVS spokesperson, did not specify where in Miami the two sites are being built. However, he confirmed "six brand new locations planned during the next six months."
