CVS plans to lay off nearly 200 Rhode Islanders at corporate headquarters. What we know.

WOONSOCKET — CVS Health plans to lay off 198 Rhode Islanders at the company's headquarters in Woonsocket and Cumberland, the company announced on Friday.

The cuts will be effective Oct. 21, spokesman Mike DeAngelis said in an email.

The Woonsocket-based pharmacy chain announced earlier this month that it intends to lay off 5,000 of its 300,000 employees nationwide. At the time, the company said that it would be mostly corporate positions getting cut, rather than public-facing jobs in stores.

After the cut, Woonsocket's employee count in Rhode Island will be about 7,500 people, DeAngelis said.

CVS WARN notice coming Friday

Under the federal Worker Adjustment And Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, companies are required to notify the state Department of Labor and Training before they lay off a significant number of workers. DeAngelis said CVS' "WARN notice" would be filed on Friday.

500 positions total to be laid off, 198 held by RI residents

While the notice will indicate that more than 500 positions are affected, only 198 of those positions are held by Rhode Island residents, DeAngelis said. He explained that the count also includes people who live in other states or work remotely "but report to someone who is located in Rhode Island."

Edwine Paul, a spokesperson for the labor department, confirmed on Friday that the department had received CVS' WARN notice.
