CVS closing location in KC’s Historic Northeast neighborhood

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — People one neighborhood now face a challenge filling their prescriptions.

When the CVS store in the city’s Historic Northeast neighborhood shuts down, it will leave 30,000 customers with few options.

A sign on the store’s front door indicates that location, which sits at Independence Avenue and Prospect, will close for keeps on June 13.

A CVS spokesperson told FOX4 this closure is part of the company’s shutdown of 900 locations nationwide.

“There’s a lot of people here. Not very many pharmacies,” Anthony Spalitto, whose family operates the nearby Spalitto’s Pharmacy, said.

Spalitto’s has been open since 1929 as an independent pharmacy. Managers there know CVS’ customers may come calling.

It would be a shorter drive than the nearest CVS, which is on Main Street in downtown Kansas City. That’s a four-mile drive from the Old Northeast.

“Transportation is going to be tough, especially if you live here. It’s about a 10-minute drive, roughly, traffic depending. I guess that’s what they’re going to have to do. Unless they transfer before they close, their scripts are automatically going to be sent there,” Spalitto said.

Economic catalysts in that neighborhood have already reached out to developers, seeking to attract business to the soon-to-be vacant store.

Bobbi Baker-Hughes, who directs the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District, believes the storefront will be filled quickly, and the neighborhood’s existing pharmacists will be ready.

“I think the Northeast can handle the prescription needs that were coming out of CVS with our other pharmacies. We need to be looking for great support staff for those pharmacies,” Baker said.

In the past two years, CVS has closed six Kansas City metro locations.

Baker said her office plans to survey people who live to see what they’d like to see at this vacant location. That CVS spokesperson also said the company doesn’t plan to close anymore stores in our metro this year.
