Cutting Edge Scores Four Titles In TIFF

EXCLUSIVE: Music financier Cutting Edge Group and its investment arm Conduct is proving to be an attractive piece in the independent financing puzzle, with the company securing deals to invest in four new titles at Toronto this year.

The music publishing rights specialist has signed deals to invest in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards, starring Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish and Peter Dinklage; WW2 drama HHhH with Jason Clarke, Jack O’Connell, Mia Wasikowska and Rosamund Pike; Wim Wenders’ romantic drama Submergence, with Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy; and The Weinstein Company’s Hotel Mumbai, based on the 2008 terrorist attack on the renowned Taj Mahal Hotel from director Basil Iwanyk.

Cutting Edge invested in five films that premiered at TIFF including Message from the King, The Exception, Burn Your Maps, Their Finest and The Limehouse Golem, the latter two titles from Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen’s UK banner Number 9 Films.

“It’s been an excellent TIFF for us,” Conduct’s managing director James Gibb said. “These are high quality, award-deserving films that we are proud to be involved with.”

The company has approximately $140 million currently under management and has provided capital and investment services to more than 400 feature films, including The King’s Speech, Carol and Drive.

Cutting Edge recently renewed its slate deal with Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Pictures and closed a 12-picture deal with Brian Oliver’s Cross Creek Pictures, a five-picture deal with QED and a three-picture deal with Courtney Soloman and Mark Canton’s Cinelou Films.

Through its partnership with Cross Creek, it also invested in Mel Gibson’s Venice sensation Hacksaw Ridge.
