Cupping ... for the Face!?

Cupping is an ancient practice, widely believed to increase blood flow and stimulate muscle recovery. The latest trend takes it further – to the face. Some celebrities are reportedly having their faces cupped to plump the skin before a big event.

Registered Nurse Jamie performs the procedure on a volunteer in The Doctors’ treatment room. She explains, “The skin is drawn into a cup, creating a suction. It just allows for increased circulation, lymphatic drainage.”

ER Physician Dr. Travis Stork wants to know how long the results last. Nurse Jamie compares it to a facial – but she adds that cupping can increase the skin’s absorption of beneficial topical ingredients. “You’re going to have that glow for about a month.” She also combines the treatment with cryotherapy, chilling the cups.

Dermatologist Dr. Sonya Batra warns, “This is a nice new modality in skilled hands, but try not to do this at home. You can really go overboard with suction! You’ve seen those marks on people’s backs. You may not want those on your face.”

Nurse Jamie also uses a facial roller to help the active ingredients penetrate the skin. The Doctors agree that this treatment combines a lot of great modalities – massage, cryotherapy, beneficial ingredients, and the cupping. And all together, they work to make volunteer Louise look great!
