Cumberland County Commissioners: Three Democrats head to November general election

Democrats Kirk deViere, Karla Icaza and Toni Stewart will face off against three Republicans for seats on the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners in the Nov. 5 general election, according to unofficial election results Tuesday.

Three of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners District 2 seats are on the ballot this year. One of those is currently held by first-term Democratic incumbent Stewart. Commissioners Jimmy Keefe and Michael Boose, who also represent District 2 and have terms expiring in December, did not file for reelection.

According to unofficial results from the North Carolina Board of Elections, deViere led the votes with 7,626 or 33% of the total, followed by Stewart with 6,751 or 29%. Icaza came in third with 4,445 or 19%.

The fourth Democratic contender, Ronald Pittman, had 4,415 votes, or 19%.

DeViere is a former Fayetteville City Council member and former North Carolina state senator representing Cumberland County.

Icaza, who is president of Fayetteville’s chapter of Latinos United for Progress, ran unsuccessfully during the 2020 election.

Pittman, who has been executive director of Arms of Refuge, an organization that aims to eradicate homelessness across Cumberland County, was unsuccessful in bids for county commissioner in 2010, 2014 and 2022.
