Cue the Outrage: Hillary Clinton Had a Beer and Danced
Yes, Hillary Clinton drank and had a lot of fun at a salsa bar in the resort town of Cartagena, Colombia. No, that doesn't mean the Secretary of State is an embarrassment to the United States. Clinton's "I love you so much, and I drank a little bit" smile (above) is clearly a different Hillary than the one we've seen over the past few weeks, thanks to her badass Texts From Hillary meme. And perhaps that's why The New York Post chose to go with it's "Swillary" cover story. According to Jeane MacIntosh's sources:
Witnesses said Clinton played maracas and danced the rumba to three songs played by the club’s Cuba-centric house band.
In all, Clinton’s party ordered a dozen beers, two shots and bottles of water. They left their waiter a $40 tip.
Before leaving, Clinton shook hands with the 11 band members and thanked them for the good time. Clinton spokesman Phillipe Reines wouldn’t comment on the choice of venue for the night out.
Two shots (for a group of people)? Bottles of water? Three songs? Clinton's "wild" night wouldn't register on Dartmouth's or the General Services Administration's party scales, but it was enough for the conservative-leaning Nile Gardiner to ask "Is Hillary Clinton becoming an embarrassment as Secretary of State?" in his latest column for The Telegraph. Gardiner writes:
But I suspect that a lot of US taxpayers will see it differently – as a senior government official having a jolly time on an official overseas junket at taxpayers’ expense. And this was hardly a display of good judgment at a time when nearly 13 million Americans are unemployed, and US soldiers are laying their lives on the line every day in Afghanistan.
It is hard to imagine Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Madeleine Albright or Henry Kissinger “livin' la vida loca” on the world stage. This was less an example of “smart power” than a boozy nightclub audition for the sixth season of Jersey Shore
With Gardiner and The Post's phony outrage (we're counting down to the inevitable Drunk Texts From Hillary tumblr), it kind of makes you wish that Texts From Hillary would make one final appearance. If just to say:
