C.T. Walker Magnet School hosts meeting with RCBOE consultant, discussing possible demolition

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- Frustration of parents and administrators of C.T. Walker Magnet School, expressing their concerns as to why the school shouldn’t be considered for closure.

The C.T. Walker council met with the Richmond County Board of Education and its consultant Thursday, with one goal in mind: to get clarification on what will happen to Walker in the future.

“Maybe we got a little bit more clarity… like C.T. Walker, the schedule for demolition is in 2025; the summer of ’25 he confirmed that for us and it was very clear as well there’s really no actual vote for C.T. Walker, so if we need to make a difference, we’re going to have to make a difference now” said Alettia Rucker, secretary of C.T. Walker council.

Richmond County’s School Board is reviewing recommendations from a consultant.  It’s part of a master plan meant to maximize student performance, and state funding.  The recommendations include school closures and consolidations.

Parents say they believe it’s gentrification.

“I think they want to sell this building to do whatever it is to further gentrify, make a walking path, a field whatever it is they plan to do; but I don’t think it’s in any interest or the betterment of our children as to why they’re trying to close this building and demolish this building,” said Jana Ingram, parent.

“Ok first of all, C.T. Walker is historical. I’m not even from here and I get the pride and the sense of history and my daughter is in kindergarten, so we just got here this year and I tell the family that’s here ” said Alettia Rucker, secretary of C.T. Walker council.

They also say it’s about the kids and rebuilding what they already have.

“They’ve raised a lot of money for the school to have a new playground they’ve raised a lot of money for the school to have reconstruction that was the story they came up with this year and it’s integrity the kids they’re excited to continue to build on their school” said Tiffany Prieto, parent.

“There’s an option for them to remodel this building bring it up to standard and offer our kids services in the same facility that they’re currently in and I think we have not explored that at all” said Jana Ingram, parent.
