CT teen in custody following assault of elderly man during attempted carjacking

A 15-year-old is in custody after police allege that he was among a group of individuals who assaulted an elderly man during an attempted carjacking in Hamden on Thursday.

Officers were called to the area of Alltown Fresh, located at 1941 Dixwell Ave., shortly after 10 a.m. on a report of an active carjacking, according to Lt. Raymond Quinn of the Hamden Police Department.

Reports indicated three males allegedly threw an elderly man to the ground before one of them got into his vehicle and tried starting it, Quinn said in a statement. The car could not be started because the keys were with the victim.

According to Quinn, the carjackers were scared away by good Samaritans and fled on foot before officers arrived.

Bystanders were able to point out one of the suspects to the first officer on the scene. The suspect was running on Weybosset Street before he was taken into custody, Quinn said.

The other two carjackers got away and could not be located by police, who used a K-9 to try to find them. One of them was wearing all black clothing and the other was wearing a gray sweatshirt and shorts, according to Quinn.

The elderly man suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment, Quinn said.

The teen who was arrested faces charges of assault on an elderly person, conspiracy of assault on an elderly person, criminal attempt of robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle and conspiracy of robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle.

Police are still investigating the incident.
