CT state police arrest teen after recovering car stolen from Rhode Island

A juvenile was arrested Monday after state police recovered a vehicle in Sterling that was stolen from Rhode Island and prevented an apparent attempted theft of another car.

A trooper began investigating just after 2:40 a.m. upon spotting a “suspicious” disabled vehicle on Sterling Road, according to Connecticut State Police.

The vehicle, which was registered out of Westerly, Rhode Island, was running and unoccupied. State police later learned it had been reported stolen from Hopville, Rhode Island.

At a nearby residence, a trooper found a vehicle that had been broken into through its rear windshield that was smashed out. The car’s alarm was sounding and its ignition system had been tampered with, according to state police.

Troopers secured and patrolled the area and conducted a K-9 track to search for any suspects.

Just before 5 a.m., state police found a 17-year-old boy and took him into custody. He was arrested on charges of first-degree criminal mischief, conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle, sixth-degree larceny, first-degree criminal trover and interfering with an officer.

The teen is free on a promise to appear and is expected to appear in juvenile court in Willimantic next Tuesday.
