CT karate instructor charged with sexual assault for ‘inappropriate relationship’ with student

Police have arrested a karate instructor in Cromwell on sexual assault charges for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a minor who was a student of his.

Orest Markiv, 32, was arrested Wednesday on two counts of second-degree sexual assault, according to a statement issued by Frederick Sifodaskalakis, chief of police at the Cromwell Police Department.

Sifodaskalakis said police in March received a complaint alleging Markiv had an inappropriate relationship with a minor at Impact Martial Arts, at 319 Main St. He was charged after an “extensive investigation” by the police department’s Detective Bureau, according to Sifodaskalakis.

Markiv was held on a $150,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Middletown Superior Court.
