CSRA high school graduation ceremonies commence

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF)- High school graduations in the CSRA continue.

Seniors at Greenbrier High School in Columbia County and Hephzibah and Butler High Schools graduated Wednesday and more will walk the stage Thursday and Friday.

If you think about it, these kids go to school for between 13 and 15 years counting pre school.

This week for thousands of CSRA students all those years of hard work pay off as they walk that stage to get their diploma in front of their teachers, classmates and loved ones.

For Columbia County’s Assistant Superintendent, Steven Cummings, as an educator, this is one of his favorite events of the year.

Columbia County schools looking to hire teachers

“It’s extremely rewarding. Working with schools all year. This is what students are working hard for. Teachers are working really hard throughout the year and you see that just the work that they put in. And having two students in high school and just hearing, hearing their struggles every day and just knowing what their striving in to get to and then just to see that culminated the next couple of days is very rewarding,” said Cummings.

Richmond County Assistant Superintendent, Marcus Allen agrees.

“And so students are walking up the stairs and that moment before, when they are prepping themselves to make sure that they are the best representation for their family. And the nervousness and the excitement you can see before their name is called is such a cool thing. So I get a chance to kind of be on the site, see their smile, calm them down a little bit as well,” he said.

Allen added that graduation is the student’s accomplishment but they are not in it alone.

“But beyond our students as well, everybody that’s played a part in their success and their matriculation through school. So including parents obviously, grandparents, family members as well. But also their teachers and their principal is such a prideful thing. So I served as a principal before and to have that opportunity to walk and lead your students out and have that experience as well is just so unique,” Allen explained.
