Critics’ Choice Awards Nominations: ‘The Shape Of Water’ Leads With 14; Netflix Tops TV Contenders
Although it started out a bit slow in the awards derby this season, Fox Searchlight’s The Shape Of Water is making up for lost time capitalizing on three wins from the LA Film Critics Sunday by now easily topping
all films with a commanding 14 nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics Choice Awards. Those nods include Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for Guillermo Del Toro and acting mentions for Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, and Octavia Spencer in addition to a slew of crafts nods. Distant runners up, but all Best Picture and Director contenders were Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, and The Post, each with eight nominations. The latter three so far have each gotten a Best Picture nod from other critics groups so the CCA recognition only cements their cred in this year’s race for Oscars.
Also making an impressive showing by nailing Best Picture, Screenplay and Directing attention were Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with six, and Get Out with five. Amazon’s big gun this season, The Big Sick also impressed with six nods including Best Picture and Screenplay although it missed out in the Director’s race. Other Best Picture nominees were Darkest Hour and The Florida Project but neither made the list for either writing or directing making them long shots to prevail in a contest that looks extremely tight and unpredictable.
The indie nature of the overall kudos race so far, with recognition in most groups for many smaller films, continued with the BFCA critics but also included the first major attention paid for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, a presumed early front runner since its July debut, which had been AWOL so far in terms of critics groups mentions but appears very strong with this kind of support from the more mainstream much larger and, usually, more Oscar-predictive Critics Choice Awards. There were no shocking omissions and it seemed the BFCA had a little something for everyone considered a major contender in this wide open season, even oft times controversial streamer Netflix which was shut out of the Best Picture race but did get scattered mentions for The Meyerowitz Stories, a foreign language film nod for Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father, and four nods for Mudbound. Lionsgate’s late breaking hit Wonder reaped the rewards of a last minute campaign by nailing three nods including Adapted Screenplay, Young Actor for Jacob Tremblay, and Hair/Makeup.
It is interesting to note that Fox’s The Greatest Showman was not shown to most BFCA members in time for voting but still managed a Best Song nod for Justin Paul and Benji Pasek’s “This Is Me” which may have gotten in thanks to a Fox mailing of the sheet music and CD single. Other movies that completely missed the cut because they were not screened in time were Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Ridley Scott’s All The Money In The World which was still shooting as of last week but did manage to show in unfinished form for Golden Globe voters on Monday just before cutoff of their voting period. Last year the BFCA made a controversial move by allowing Star Wars: The Force Awakens to enter the race with a Best Picture nomination well after voting closed. Don’t look for that to be repeated again.
On the TV side members of sister group the Broadcast Television Journalists Association had no problem embracing Netflix which grabbed a leading 20 nominations followed by HBO with 15, FX with 13, and ABC with 12. Topping the list were FX mini series Feud: Bette And Joan with six (including five for actors but a snub for co-star Susan Sarandon), FX’s Fargo with five, and HBO’s Big Little Lies with five. Glow was the top individual program for Netflix with four nods. Emmy winner drama series The Handmaid’s Tale delivered three for Hulu but its Emmy winning counterpart Veep was nowhere to be found in the Comedy races, likely because its airdates may have made it ineligible. As for the Broadcast Networks NBC continues to carry the flag in the marquee drama series races with This Is Us garnering three major nominations, but ABC’s major Fall hit The Good Doctor was completely shut out, although star Freddie Highmore was nominated for the last season of Bates Motel.
The comedy race was another story for the commercial nets with veteran series like The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and Black-ish making the list to compete with new streaming series from Netflix and Amazon. Other Drama series contenders include Starz’ American Gods, The Crown, Game Of Thrones, and Stranger Things.
The Critics Choice Awards which aired on A&E last year in December is moving back to the CW a month later to January 11, four days after the Golden Globes. It will be broadcast live from 8-10 pm. Here is the complete list of nominees in the film and television categories:
