The stars flocked to the red carpet for the 25th annual Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, January 12, to celebrate the biggest names in television and film.

Held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, it’s the second ceremony in a slew of awards shows to come this month, following last weekend’s season kickoff at the Golden Globes.

And while the big names of Hollywood were out in force, the fashion definitely took a more subdued turn than a week ago, with many stars opting for a minimal aesthetic, black and even suiting.

The most experimental outfits came from Zendaya, who wore a fuchsia Tom Ford chromed breastplate with matching jersey evening skirt, and Billy Porter, who looked as fabulous as ever in a two-tone teal Hogan McLaughlin jumpsuit.

The Tony-award winning actor covered his arms and chest in multi-coloured temporary tattoos of butterflies, which he said were "a symbol of the transgender community."

Elsewhere, bold block colour gowns emerged as a popular choice. Laura Dern, Rachel Brosnahan and Alison Brie all opted for the same hue of tangerine, while Awakafina chose sunshine yellow Elie Saab and Kristen Bell went for a lime green satin jumpsuit with asymmetrical draped sleeve by Cong Tri.

The Critics' Choice Awards are known for giving a good indication of who might be awarded Oscars in February. But they may also give us a hint at what the rest of 2020's red carpets may bring.
