Crime rate presentation at commissioners meeting

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — Mesa County Commissioners were presented with crime statistics ranging from 2008 to 2023.

The presentation, led by Mesa County Sheriff Todd Rowell and District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, showed crime rates in Mesa County remained relatively flat compared to numbers on the Front Range. The only category showing an increase in reports of crime is fraud.

One graph presented showed a dip in the number of crime filings for 2008. DA Rubinstein explained, “That was when the bottom fell out of the market, and we had to lay off about 25% of the law enforcement workforce.”

Rowell and Rubinstein stated at the end of their presentation that although news organizations report “a huge increase in crime rate(s), that is not what we see locally here.”
