A man has been sentenced to one year of probation and 64 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to firing a gun out a sunroof in Longmont last month.

Hunter Daniel Furman, 25, pleaded guilty to reckless negligence — discharging a firearm, a misdemeanor.

He was sentenced to a year of probation. District Judge Zachary Malkinson ordered Furman to take a gun safety course and give up any guns he has. Furman said he currently has no access to firearms or ammunition.

"I'm sorry and I realize what I did was very stupid and I made a very bad choice," Furman said. "I'll do whatever it takes to get out of jail and makes things better."

Malkinson agreed with Furman and described his actions as "stupid."

"(This was) extremely dangerous," Malkinson said. "It's stupid behavior."

Officers responded to a shots-heard report at 7:15 a.m. April 27 in the 1300 block of Longs Peak Avenue, according to an affidavit of the case. Longmont Emergency Communications said a woman reported hearing about 10 shots that sounded like gunshots. Police found 10 9 mm shell casings on Longs Peak Avenue between Grant and Francis streets.

One caller reported seeing a black "sports sedan"-style car, occupied by two people, with the front passenger shooting a handgun out of the window into the air.

In court, attorneys said that Furman went shooting with a friend and then fired the gun out of the sunroof afterward, unaware that he was in Longmont city limits.
