MEDINA, Ohio (WJW) – Construction crews started demolishing the old Super Kmart building in Medina on Thursday, making room for the new Meijer supercenter coming to the city.

Medina city officials shared photos with FOX 8, showing crews tearing down the 158,000-square-foot building on North Court Street that has remained vacant for years.

“For over a decade, the building has sat vacant, was condemned by the city, was repeatedly
cited for various issues and the current owners [were] eventually fined for various building code
violations,” city officials said in a press release.

Officials say Meijer took an interest in the site. With redevelopment now underway, officials say the project will breathe new life into the area.

“The City of Medina is pleased and thankful to see the demolition of the old Kmart begin today,” said Mayor Dennis Hanwell in the release. “This has been an eyesore in our community for over a decade and we look forward to the new building and parking lot that the Meijer store is investing in our community.”

This will be the grocery store chain’s second location in Medina County. This first is located in Brunswick.

Medina’s Super Kmart, the first of its kind in the country, opened in July 1991. The store announced it was closing in late 2011.
