Crews respond to fire at Arkansas Capitol

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Crews with the Little Rock Fire Department responded to a fire at the Arkansas Capitol building on Friday evening.

According to LRFD officials, Capitol Security spotted smoke on a security camera around 5:45 p.m. They then alerted the fire department and evacuated the building.

Authorities said fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, which started in the café on the basement level of the State Capitol. They added that the café was closed when the fire started.

“It looks like it may have been burning for a while. A lot of the plastics and stuff are melted, and there’s soot, heavy soot, so I think it was smoldering for a while,” Captain Jason Weaver with LRFD said. “There were doors open and it allowed the smoke to get into the entire basement, which is the length of the capitol”

Department officials said the fire was limited to the café, but the extent of the smoke and water damage has yet to be determined.

LRFD officials said there were no injuries.
