Crews recover bodies of 2 construction workers after Baltimore bridge collapse; 4 still missing

BALTIMORE, Md. (DC News Now) — Officials said Wednesday afternoon that crews found the bodies of two construction workers who fell into the Patapsco River Tuesday when the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed.

Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. with Maryland State Police (MSP) said at a news conference that divers located a pickup truck in which the workers were trapped.

Butler said the men who died were Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, Md. and Dorian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, of Dundalk, Md.

Brawner Builders, the company for which the men worked, said they and others were in their trucks on their breaks when the container ship Dali hit the bridge, causing the collapse.

Butler said because of conditions in the river, crews moved from recovery mode to a salvage-recovery effort. He explained that the amount of concrete and debris in the water made it unsafe for divers to navigate safely in the river any longer.

Butler said crews believe the trucks of the remaining workers are encased in the bridge’s superstructure, which fell into the river, and concrete.
