Several storage units in Grandville complex total loss in fire

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — Several storage units in a Grandville complex were a total loss following a Friday evening fire, crews say.

Just before 5 p.m., crews with the Grandville Fire Department were sent to the Mini Storage Depot at 4785 Canal Ave. SW near Rivertown Parkway for a fire.

Responding crews found heavy smoke and fire in one of the buildings on the site which had between 50 and 75 individual storage garages.

The fire department said that about half of the building and the items stored were saved but the other half is a total loss. Mini Storage Depot later notified customers via email that the fire occurred in building “D.”

One person was believed to be inside the building when the fire started. The fire department said that they were treated for minor injuries and taken to a local hospital.

Investigators believe that the fire was accidental but are still investigating.

“Representatives from the Mini Storage Depot were on site and will be contacting the lessees whose units were impacted by the fire. Anyone with questions about their property should contact Mini Storage Depot directly,” the fire department said in a release.

In a letter to customers, Mini Storage Depot said that the site is closed until further notice. Customers will be receiving an email regarding accessing their units once the investigation is complete.

“We appreciate the flexibility as we continue to manage this accident and are working as quickly as possible with both the fire services and resoration to secure the facility. If you are a customer that is renting in the “D” building, please reach out to your insurance provider to give them notification of a possible claim in regard to a fire incident on 2/9/24. To reiterate, there will be no access to the site for anyone until the area is secured, which we have crews mobilizing today, 2/10/24. We will be reaching out with more details ASAP. Again, thank you for your understanding while we work to get the facility back in order.”

Firefighters from Grandville, Wyoming, Georgetown Township and Byron Township responded, according to dispatch.
