Crews battle vacant building fire in south Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Wichita Fire Department battled a building fire early Thursday on the city’s south side. The fire happened at Harry and Mead around 3:15 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a boarded-up building.

“It’s one of those things where we have to work on getting everything opened up so we can get inside and get a search and knock that fire down,” Capt. Stephen Runyan, Wichita Fire Department, said.

Firefighters had to evacuate the building due to flames shooting from the ceiling. The fire was put out around 4 a.m.

No firefighters were injured, and the cause is under investigation.
