Virginia Department of Forestry responds to over 100 wildfires over two days

UPDATE: 3/22 ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — As wildfires continue to rage in several counties, the Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) says within the last two days they have responded to more than 100 fires.

The department said those fires have scorched more than 7,500 acres. Currently, some of the largest fires are in Page and Rockingham County.

To help firefighters, the DOF is encouraging the community to:

  • Not start fires, even after 4 p.m.

  • Check with local officials for fire restrictions and safety alerts

  • Call 911 to report a wildfire

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The battle to contain several fires across Virginia continues as new fires ignite in our area.

The Virginia Department of Forestry says on March 20, crews have extinguished 16 wildfires and are working to contain dozens more. According to the DOF fire map, there are currently four active fires across Southwest and Central Virginia. The blazes are in Highland, Augusta, Pulaski, and Grayson counties.

Fires continue to spark throughout Southwest Virginia

One of the most recent fires sparked in Highland County near State Highway 656 on Wednesday. The blaze is currently about 20 acres. A fire the same size broke out in Augusta County.

Currently, both fires are 0% contained, according to the fire map.

Crews are also battling a three-acre fire near Mateer and Stack Road in Rockbridge County. The DOF says the fire is about 75% contained.

Wildfires rage in Rockingham County, covering 200-acre area

Additionally, a small separate fire burning near Langhorne Road in Pulaski County is almost one acre and is about 80% contained.
