Wisconsin is one of 30 states affected by a recall of select cream cheese spreads distributed to multiple grocery store chains.

Schreiber Foods, which manufactured the spreads, issued a voluntary recall for the products and said on May 7 it was informed by a supplier that an ingredient used in several cream cheese spread formulas has the potential to contain salmonella, USA TODAY reported.

No cases of illness related to this incident have been reported to the company, Schreiber Foods said. The company advised customers who purchased any of the items to discard the product or return it to the store for a full refund.

The recall impacts "select" Aldi stores in 28 states and Washington, D.C., and Hy-Vee stores, Hy-Vee Drugstore and Dollar Fresh Market locations, and Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores in eight states. In Wisconsin, the recalls have impacted both Aldi and Hy-Vee stores.

What is salmonella?

Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the U.S. each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most people who become ill from salmonella have diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, and symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after infection and last 4-7 days. Most people recover without specific treatment and should not take antibiotics, the CDC says. Antibiotics are typically only used to treat people who have severe illness or are at risk for it.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
