People with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome or an extra piece of a chromosome. The cause is unknown and the genetic condition causes physical and developmental problems.

Since chromosomes are shaped like socks, the idea is to get people talking about Down syndrome. It’s a special day to celebrate the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 772 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chromosomal condition.
