Crayola Reveals Name of Its New Blue Crayon

Crayola is making waves in the crayon world by eliminated an old favorite for a new offering.

The company’s classic box of 24 crayons will no longer have the ‘dandelion’ yellow as it will be adding a new blue crayon called ‘Bluetiful.’ The color is based on a pigment that the Oregon State University created with materials that are usually used in electronics.

Other names that were considered for the crayon include Dreams Come Blue, Blue Moon Bliss, Reach for the Stars and Star Spangled Blue. Expect Bluetiful to be in Crayola’s products next year.

The color was unveiled in may and the company encouraged fans to offer names. A total of more than 90,000 names were thrown around, and Bluetiful ultimately took the win.

Other colors that Crayola has retired in the past include maize, raw umber and orange yellow. The company added a nickname to the color in the form of Bea, which is reportedly “shy at first, but I love to share BIG ideas with new people especially ideas for new inventions or creative projects.”

Bea’s hobbies include coding apps or video games and relaxing with DIY projects. “I’m a big advocate for arts-infused STEAM education, especially for inspired girls like me!” she adds, seeking to encourage girls and women who wish to be coders to follow their dreams.
