Crawford County Board of DD celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD) strives to raise awareness for people with developmental disabilities all year long, but during March the CCBDD hosts special activities and events promoting kindness, diversity, inclusion and acceptance.

CCBDD has partnered with area schools to host a second grade coloring contest where kids get to show their coloring abilities on a picture depicting this year’s theme. A middle school poster contest offers students the chance to show off their art skills.

The biggest event is the sixth annual Crawford County Unified Exhibition Basketball Game at 7 p.m. March 22 at Bucyrus High School. Local high school and Special Olympics athletes from Crawford County will unite in two teams for a basketball game to determine who gets bragging rights for the next year.

There will be lots of activities during the game and the winners of the youth contests will be announced. Admission is free, although donations of non-perishables and personal hygiene products to support the Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ food pantry will be accepted at the door to help families served by the agency.

Needs include canned goods, boxed food and drink, and hygiene products. Any monetary donations as well as proceeds from concessions will benefit the local Special Olympics, Chargers for Change and CCBDD’s food pantry.

In May, the Crawford County CU Lead program will have the opportunity to participate in CCBDD's adult half-day awareness tour. Their tour will include visiting a group home, day programs, employers, Fairway School and a tour of CCBDD's new assistive technology room.

Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities serves and supports over 350 children and adults through early intervention, Fairway Preschool, public schools, community services, day programming, community employment and Special Olympics.
