Man drives off S.R. 14 in Streetsboro after reportedly falling sleep, hits utility pole
Minor injuries were reported after a car went off State Route 14 in Streetsboro Thursday morning and struck a utility pole, causing a live wire to drop onto another passing car.
Streetsboro Police Lt. Rich Polivka said in an email to the Record-Courier that a Streetsboro man, 19, reported he fell asleep at the wheel while he was driving a Lexus ES northwest bound between State Route 303 and Mondial Parkway and went off the right side of the road, opposite an NTB service center, at about 6:45 a.m.
The Lexus then struck a utility pole and the wire fell onto a southeast bound Toyota Camry driven by a Twinsburg woman, 45, said Polivka.
The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center, said Polivka, but no injuries to the woman were reported.
"We would like to remind the public that driving while drowsy has been shown in studies to be nearly as dangerous as driving while drunk," wrote Polivka "If you are driving and you feel that you might be dozing off, please pull off and take a break."
Alerts sent out by Streetsboro police indicate the road was closed for less than an hour.
