Crabbe fifth-grader local 'Grandparent of Year' essay winner

Mar. 7—ASHLAND — Crabbe Elementary student Kylie Newsome read her winning "Grandparent of the Year" essay at the quarterly Boyd County Retired Teachers' Association meeting at The Elks Lodge on Thursday.

Kylie wrote about LaBreeska "Bree" Vanover, her surrogate grandmother in her "Why My Grandparent should be the AARP Grandparent of the Year" submission. A winner on the local level, the essay will now enter into state competition.

Crabbe Elementary Principal Uriah Tolbert, teacher Kristy Minton, Kylie's father, Eric Newsome, and Vanover were present for Kylie's recognition and public reading.

As penned in her essay, Kylie deemed Vanover worthy of the honor because "she's the most caring person" who is "affectionate and trustworthy," said the fifth-grade student.

Kylie wrote that her mother hasn't lived with them in a few years, and that she isn't close with her biological grandparents. Vanover has stepped into and embraced that role — going above and beyond her babysitting duties.

"I can tell her anything," Kylie said. "Bree tells me and my sisters she loves us."

The annual essay competition is in its 22nd year.
