CPKC Final Spike Steam Tour heading to Union Station this weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s truly one-of-a-kind, and it’s making a stop in Kansas City as it undertakes the longest trip ever for a steam locomotive.

It’s called the 2816 but nicknamed “The Empress.”

This newly restored relic from 1930 is traveling from Calgary through North America all the way to Mexico.

It’ll go more than 9,000 miles total — the most ever for a steam train. Canadian Pacific used this locomotive through 2011 and then shuttered it.

But then two years ago, they began to restore it and decided to take it out on the North American trip to celebrate the merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern Railroads.

They’re halfway through their journey, and they are impressed with how well this steam train runs after all these years.

“Would you drive your 1930 model Ford from Calgary to Mexico City? Probably not. But you can do that with this because they’re just very well-built, very well-designed, and you know, she is doing what she was designed to do today in the same way she was doing it in 1930.” Jonathan Morris, the CPKC Manager of Operating Practices, said.

You can see the 2816 in person this Saturday at Union Station. It’ll be parked on the tracks in the back from noon until 5 p.m., and the event is free for all.
