CPD officer shoots dog on Far South Side

CHICAGO — A CPD officer shot an unleashed dog on the city’s Far South Side on Sunday after police say it approached officers in an aggressive manner.

According to Chicago police, it happened while officers were conducting an investigation in the 11000 block of South Vernon Avenue in Roseland, just before noon.

Police say while officers were outside, the dog approached the officers in an aggressive manner after it became unleashed by its owner. One officer then fired a shot, hitting the dog.

Amid the incident, another officer sustained an injury to their leg from “apparent debris.” The officer was taken to the hospital in good condition.

Police have not provided updates on the condition of the dog and it is currently unclear if it survived.

Following the incident, officers say the dog’s owner was given an unleashed dog citation.

CPD Area Two Detectives are now investigating.
