Cowboys swimming prepares for WAC championships

Feb. 28—The University of Wyoming men's swimming and diving team is slated to compete in the Western Athletic Conference championships starting Wednesday in Pharr, Texas.

UNLV — which is aiming to repeat for a fourth time as champion — was picked first in the pre-championship poll. Grand Canyon checked in at No. 2, and UW was selected third.

The Cowboys finished fourth at last year's championships with plenty of notable finishes. A total of 15 UW student-athletes earned All-WAC honors last season.

Quinn Cynor highlighted the meet with a conference title in the 200-yard butterfly. Gavin Smith also made headlines, breaking the school record in the 100 butterfly, while the 200 medley relay team also set a new school record.

The Cowboys completed the regular season with a 3-5 record, including a 1-1 mark in conference duals. Cynor — who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials before the season even started — led the squad with 11 individual victories.

Last year, the Rebels won the team title, while the Antelopes finished second and Cal Baptist rounded out the top three. The Cowboys finished fourth.

Wednesday's action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the 1-meter diving preliminaries. Each day will follow the same format, with preliminary events in the morning followed by finals in the evening.

UW's swim program endured a tragic loss last week with the deaths of Carson Muir, 18, Charlie Clark, 19, and Luke Slabber, 21, in a single-vehicle accident in Colorado. Some of UW's eligible swimmers have opted not to compete in the WAC championships.

The meet is being broadcast on ESPN-Plus. Live results will also be available on UW's website.
