COVID hospital admission rates are rising in the Peoria area. Here's what to know

PEORIA - COVID hospital admission levels are rising, and the area health departments are asking people to take precautions.

The number of hospitalized people testing positive for COVID-19 in Peoria and Tazewell counties rose 21.7% in the week of Nov. 19-25, with 56 people testing positive, a rate of 15.1 positive cases per 100,000 residents, according to the CDC's COVID tracker.

Nearby Knox County fared worse, with 27.1 positive cases per 100,000 residents, an increase of 260% from the previous week.

The CDC considers the hospital admission rate high in Knox County. Peoria and Tazewell are still in the medium range, but that's high enough for the health departments to bring attention to the situation.

A post on the Peoria City/County Health Department's Facebook page urged people to get vaccinated and avoid contact with anyone suspected of having COVID-19. People who are sick should stay home, and anyone at high risk of severe illness should wear masks when in public indoors.
