Monroe County is averaging more than 500 new COVID-19 cases per day, as the spike in new cases worsened this week, according to the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

According to the county COVID-19 dashboard, which is updated on weekdays, 695 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Wednesday. The figure is not as high as Tuesday's spike of 790 new cases, but still more than twice as many as were reported on Monday.

The new 7-day rolling average of new COVID-19 cases is 513, which is a 6.2% increase over the previous rolling average.

New cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Monroe County, according to the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

According to the county COVID-19 dashboard, which is updated on weekdays, 790 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Tuesday. The figure is more than twice as many new cases — a 160% increase — over the 303 new cases were reported just one day earlier.

The new 7-day rolling average is 483 new cases per day.

COVID hospitalizations rising in Monroe County NY as cases surge

COVID-related hospitalizations are again on the rise in the Finger Lakes region, according to Monroe County officials.

On Monday afternoon, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Public Health Commissioner Michael Mendoza together reported a 36% increase in hospitalizations over the previous Monday, April 4. The latest data shows 166 people hospitalized due to COVID-19, an increase from the 122 patients on April 4. Twenty-one of the hospitalized patients are in the intensive care unit.

“This is a concerning trend,” they said. “While the vast majority of individuals currently infected with COVID are not experiencing severe illness, the BA-2 variant is proving to be dangerous to some.”

In all, 3,183 new COVID-19 cases were reported since April 4, bumping the 7-day rolling average to 455 new cases per day. Eight new deaths were reported in that same timeframe, bringing the total of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,823.

County officials urged anyone at higher risk for severe complications from the virus to maintain as much physical distancing as possible and to wear a N95 or KN95 mask when in an indoor, public setting. Those eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination or booster shot should seek those as soon as possible.

New COVID-19 cases up 59% in Monroe County NY

New coronavirus cases leaped in New York in the week ending Sunday, rising 41.8% as 32,114 cases were reported. The previous week had 22,654 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

New York ranked third among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 20.8% from the week before, with 238,885 cases reported. With 5.84% of the country's population, New York had 13.44% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 34 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

  • Monroe County reported 1,436 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 903 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 153,169 cases and 1,553 deaths.

  • Ontario County reported 193 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 129 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 20,123 cases and 175 deaths.

  • Wayne County reported 167 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 110 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 17,385 cases and 173 deaths.

  • Livingston County reported 91 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 28 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,696 cases and 115 deaths.

  • Orleans County reported 33 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 30 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,636 cases and 113 deaths.

  • Genesee County reported 55 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 31 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 13,697 cases and 185 deaths.

COVID outbreaks in New York

Within New York, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Oswego County with 493 cases per 100,000 per week; Onondaga County with 352; and Cayuga County with 346. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were New York County, with 4,925 cases; Kings County, with 3,634 cases; and Queens County, with 2,674. Weekly case counts rose in 53 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Kings, New York and Nassau counties.

New York ranked 8th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 89.8% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.2%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, New York reported administering another 228,560 vaccine doses, including 27,016 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 145,584 vaccine doses, including 24,924 first doses. In all, New York reported it has administered 38,648,845 total doses.

Across New York, cases fell in nine counties, with the best declines in Onondaga County, with 1,622 cases from 1,705 a week earlier; in Tompkins County, with 326 cases from 358; and in Delaware County, with 76 cases from 96.

In New York, 61 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 65 people were reported dead.

A total of 5,037,932 people in New York have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 68,055 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 80,396,250 people have tested positive and 985,504 people have died.

Hospitals in 19 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 16 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 26 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
