Courtyards of Cape Coral South sets bingo fundraiser for residents still affected by Ian

A Cape Coral community still coping with Hurricane Ian's aftermath and slow insurance, is turning to one another as many still live without their condos.

They plan to host a bingo night on Saturday, to help alleviate costs for residents still facing repairs. There will be 10 total games with gift basket raffle items and special designer bags up for grabs.

The Courtyards of Cape Coral South, 1500 Southwest Courtyards Terrace, has 132 residents, and 18 months after Hurricane Ian hit the city on Sept. 28, 2022, is still waiting on insurance money to finish fixing a large portion of their units.

Over 30 residents of the Courtyards of Cape Coral South are will volunteer and host a bingo event in the community’s clubhouse.

Janet Correa, a part-time resident of eight years, said more than 50 seniors are homeless as their units have been stripped inside and out.

Those residents are living with family members.

"We are waiting on our depreciation, and they have approved it back in January, but they release checks so slowly," Correa said. "It's painful for the resident still not home."

The Courtyards of Cape Coral South and its 132 residents were hit hard by Hurricane Ian on Sept. 28, 2022 as they experienced flooding that tore through many of their units as many residents continue with repairs to this day.

Correa said the residents remaining at the condo complex have been helping one another by doing things like landscaping, setting up wifi, and hanging their possessions in their fixed units.

"We are just restoring the community the best we can," Correa said.

As they work, residents such as Correa also take note of the future insurance assessments that will be levied.

"Whatever is not enough is called an assessment, so they gave us money towards all this, but they never pay enough," Correa said. "When you have a loss, and, people don't understand that, they just think insurance is going to cover it (all)."

Because many of the residents are older and on fixed incomes, residents want to help lower some of those costs.

She hopes to raise $10,000 at the event, as she already helped raise $10,000 when she held a fundraiser in New York.
