Court documents: Federal agent saw Lubbock murder suspect shoot girlfriend

A federal agent helping Lubbock police search for the 21-year-old suspect in an armed robbery reportedly witnessed the suspect shooting his girlfriend as they argued in front of their apartment, according to court documents.

Mauriece Hendrix remains held at the Lubbock County Detention Center since his March 14 arrest in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Ariel Cade in the 1300 block of 65th Drive.

He faces multiple felony charges including murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and theft of a firearm. His bond is set at more than $580,000.

A probable cause affidavit states that an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent helping Lubbock police investigators search for Hendrix in connection with an armed robbery four days earlier, spotted him and Cade arguing outside of their apartment.

As a Lubbock police detective drove to the apartment, the federal agent reportedly called him to say he just saw Hendrix shoot Cade in the head, the affidavit states.

Neighbors told investigators that they could hear the couple argue inside and outside the apartment.

"Slamming door sounds were heard with an assault likely having occurred inside of the apartment," the affidavit states.

The affidavit did not disclose what the two argued about.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies descended to the scene and found Cade suffering a life-threatening injury.

Cade was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where she later died.

Meanwhile, Hendrix, who was seen wearing a blue flannel shirt, a blue beanie and dark pants, ran away.

A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter arrived and spotted Hendrix near the 1300 block of 58th Place.

Officers on the ground spotted Hendrix, who ran northbound.

He was caught shortly after and arrested. Investigators found the blue flannel shirt and the beanie he wore during the shooting in an alley in the 1300 block of 60th Street.

A search of Hendrix yielded two handguns, one of which was reported stolen.

Last Tuesday, a Lubbock County grand jury returned an indictment against Hendrix for the aggravated robbery case Lubbock police were initially investigating.

Court documents indicate fingerprints tied Hendrix to the 11 p.m. armed robbery at a gas station in the 2000 block of 50th Street.

A store employee told responding officers that a man approached him at the cash register to make a purchase. However, when the cash drawer opened, the customer drew a handgun from his waistband, pointed it at him and demanded money from the register.

The employee said the robber walked around the counter and emptied the cash register, stuffing the stolen money into a black bag.

The robber also stole a handful of cigarillos on his way out of the store.

Hendrix's fingerprints matched the latent prints investigators found on the store's cash register where the robber touched it, the affidavit states.

Investigators believe Hendrix used in the robbery a .40 caliber handgun with a laser sight that was reported stolen in a home burglary two days before. He is also listed as a suspect in that case, the affidavit states.
