A royal christening is on the way, but with a twist. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will break tradition for Archie’s christening. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been making their roles in the royal family their own and left a unique stamp on their legacy. Their next major occasion, the christening of their son Archie, will be no different.
The royal couple are set to have their first-born christened in early July, roughly two months after baby Archie’s birth. As with every royal baby, it will be a family affair as well as a traditional, intimate royal event. Royal commentator Camilla Tominey shared her perspective, telling Express, “They buck tradition a bit but as is ever the case, royal protocol needs to be followed. So, we will expect the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby to be officiating over the Christening.” How they will break tradition, we don’t know yet. If Welby doesn’t ring a bell for any royal family devotees, Tominey provided a refresher.

“He is close to the couple now, not just because he did the wedding but he also baptized Meghan into the Church of England so she could get married,” Tominey continued. “St. George’s Chapel in Windsor is where Harry was christened in 1984.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex personally selected St. George’s Chapel as the setting for their first born’s christening. The Chapel also has significance as the location where the royal couple were wed just a little over a year ago.
Archie will also wear the stunning christening gown royal fans have seen passed down over the decades. “And remember that Honiton lace christening gown that has been worn by all royal children,” Tominey continued. “It’s actually a replica of the original dress that Queen Victoria’s children were christened in. But it is the same fit and that is why royal babies will tend to get christened sooner rather than later – otherwise they get a little bit too big to fit in the thing.” The historic christening gown has actually been worn by more than 60 royal babies throughout history, with Archie being the latest royal to wear the garment.
It will be a royal affair with all of the family involved except for Prince Harry’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who has a prior engagement. There is also speculation as to who the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will choose to be baby Archie’s godparents. Princess Eugenie is one of the likely frontrunners as she and her cousin, Prince Harry, are extremely close. The Princess has also become quite friendly with the Duchess of Sussex within the past year or so, as well. Just like with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, we cannot wait to see our first glimpse of baby Archie, his royal parents and family during the special occasion and celebration.
