Couple discovers massive 'lava tube' running beneath their house: 'What could go wrong?'

·2 min read

A couple in Oregon said they discovered a secret “lava tube” running underneath their home.

Homeowners finding unexpected things in their houses is a common story these days. In recent months, people have shared their misadventures stumbling upon a secret staircase, a hidden room and even a “bizarre” decoration choice underneath some carpet.

In this case, Suzanne and James Brierley bought their house back in 2017 and had no idea about the existence of an underground lava tube — not until they tried to sell it, that is.

The couple told local outlet KTVZ that their realtor had mentioned a cave under the house when they were first looking at it, but she failed to accurately describe how enormous it was.

Fox News described the cave as being so large that “there are still unexplored areas that the Brierleys have yet to discover.”

Lava tubes are natural tunnels formed by lava flow. Once the lava cools or empties, a cave remains.

The entrance to the Brierleys’ lava tube was a small hole on the side of a hill on their property. However, the tube itself is massive — both of them said they could stand inside it and not reach the ceiling.

Oregon has many deep caves and ancient lava beds, which were formed centuries ago by the many active volcanoes in the area. NASA even used some of Oregon’s underground caves as training grounds for the lunar landings.

The Brierleys are still selling their house and hope the future owners take good care of the underground lava tube. Apparently, during the hot summer months, it’s a great place to stay cool.

“Dump the house and move into the Lava tubes,” one commenter wrote in response to the Fox News story. “Year-round temperature control naturally, practically unlimited space, and even a potential for a geothermal energy tap for an eternity of free energy. What could go wrong?”
