Garren Dodd McDonald, 48, and Shelley Lanette McDonald, 43, of Etowah County were taken into custody and each charged with one count of felony child abuse last week.

"[The couple] did torture, willfully abuse, cruelly beat or otherwise willfully maltreat the child," arrest warrants obtained by AL.com said.

It went on: “[They] neglected the child by failing to properly feed him and causing him to be malnourished.”

The arrests came following a nearly two-month-long investigation by authorities after the Department of Human Resources contacted the sheriff’s office about the alleged abuse.

The couple was booked into Etowah County Detention center last Wednesday and released two days later after posting $10,000 cash bond each.

They are reportedly forbidden from having children living in their home and prohibited from any unsupervised contact with anyone under 18 years old as a condition of their bond.
