County Clerk’s office opens late for 2nd day in a row

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Clerk’s office is catching heat from residents in Whitehaven that were left standing in line for hours Friday morning.

This Shelby County Clerk’s Office has been late opening its doors for two days in a row.

One resident, LaVon Hinds, says he came to the clerk’s office on Elvis Presley Blvd to get his tags. He has been without tags for six months.

“I’m sick of it,” he said. “I come early trying to get inside so I won’t be stuck out here and I’m still outside.”

Unfortunately, he still does not have them.

“They ain’t got no key and what kind of mess is that? Don’t got no key?” Hinds said. “Them people who work here. The employees standing out here too.”

WREG tried speaking to employees to see what caused the delay, but no one could respond. Even though the door says they open at 8 a.m., the doors did not open until after 9 a.m.

A petition has also been filed by the state to remove Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert from office.

Steven Gilmore says that does not mean residents should get the short end of the stick.

“No matter what the problem is with Wanda Halbert, this should not affect everyone in this city okay? And that’s what this is doing,” Gilmore said.

WREG reached out to Mayor Lee Harris and he said, “I don’t think we know what the source of the problem is at the clerk’s office. All we know is that there are lots of problems and they need to be addressed.
