BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Two projects that are expected to improve two of the South Valley’s busiest roads will soon begin. Rio Bravo Boulevard Gap Improvements Project

The Rio Bravo Boulevard Gap Improvements Project includes the construction of an additional lane of travel in each direction on Rio Bravo Boulevard from Prince Street to Second Street, increasing the number of lanes from four to six. Other improvements include multi-use trail connection, sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting, and signal upgrades.

This project is set to start on Monday.

Second Street and Rio Bravo (NM 500) Intersection Improvements

The Second Street and Rio Bravo (NM 500) Intersection Improvements project extends from Barr Canal to the east of Second Street, where the gap improvement project concludes. Upgrades will be made to the railroad crossing, and an additional lane will also be added in each direction.

This project is projected to start in the summer.

Both projects are funded by Bernalillo County and the State of New Mexico. Estimated construction costs are $17.2 million, with work expected to wrap up by the spring of 2025.

“I am happy to see these investments and improvements being made to such an important thoroughfare in my district,” said District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada in a news release. “The previous upgrades made to Rio Bravo near I-25 made a big difference for commuters who live in the South Valley. These new projects will only add to that.”
