Country Duo Florida Georgia Line Spills The One Fast Food Place They Always Stop At

For about a year, Florida Georgia Line had a rough gig: About once a month, they'd taste whiskey before shows, taking notes as they came up with their own kind of alcohol, a variety with peach-pecan notes, like the South's answer to cinnamon-y Fireball. "We'd go into the meet and greet nice and buzzed," laughed Brian Kelley, one half of the country duo.

"Extra smiley," his partner, Tyler Hubbard, added.

They finally landed on Old Camp Whiskey, a line they're so proud of they drink it straight out of the bottle on stage. But, for as much as the band's gotten a reputation for bringing the party - something that's as true in their 2012 hit "Cruise" as it is today, during their Dig Your Roots tour - when they're off stage, the singers eat surprisingly clean (read: no drive-thrus here, save one very crucial exception, but we'll get to that later).

They Make Gwyneth-Caliber Smoothies.

Tour bus life is considerably tame for the stars, who start each morning with a green smoothie. It's packed with spinach, half a banana, carrots, an apple, turmeric, ginger, almond milk, and spirulina (a green-blue algae that's loaded with protein and some say boosts your immune system).

"It's basically so if we don't eat a salad the whole rest of the day, it's like we got one in," Hubbard said.

That's Not All They Have For Breakfast.

They'll often have Greek yogurt and fresh fruit, or if they really want a boost of lean protein, Kelley whips up an omelette. He loads his with vegetables, like mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, and onions.

They Go Lean At Lunch.

By mid-afternoon, Hubbard and Kelley typically grab a salad, or they'll eat baja fish tacos with soup on the side, like chicken tortilla.

Dinner Is A Serious Affair.

Florida Georgia Line may spend most of the year on the road, but that doesn't mean they're hitting up every McDonald's, Arby's, and truck stop vending machine along the way. Dinner's more of a sit-down affair; the kind of food you'd typically get at a steakhouse.

Before taking the stage at Newark's Prudential Center, the guys ate grilled tilapia, steak, vegetables, salad, and "a puréed something or other - some kind of soup," Hubbard said.

Sticking to a veggie- and lean protein-based diet can help curb cravings, which may explain the duo's herculean self-control, walking past a massive spread of jars filled with candy backstage without stopping.

They'll Always Break Their Diets For This.

Bite-sized Snickers and vases full of gumballs may not tempt FGL, but that doesn't mean they're totally immune to sweets. "If I drop by a Krispy Kreme and the hot sign's on, hell yeah! I don't care what time of day it is, I'm going in," Kelley said. "That's a Kelley family rule: If you drive by - it can't be two days in a row - but if you drive by, you have to go in. If you see it, there's a reason you saw it. You go."

Considering the guys' next stop after Newark, NJ, is Houston, TX, that could mean a lot of donut breaks. It's probably a good thing Kelley has that not-two-days-in-a-row rule. And in the rare chance he misses Krispy Kreme, his other go-to is a little lighter: gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and almond milk. Or his grandmother's banana bread, that his sister now makes.

"I don't get to see her very often, but when I do, I always request her to make it," he said. "A slice of banana bread with coffee in the morning? It's perfect."

For Hubbard, it all comes down to two foods specifically. "Chocolate gelato and pizza," he said. "If I'm cheating, that's what I go to. I know it's simple, but that's it for me."

At this point, the duo's ready to take the stage. There won't be pizza or donuts, but they will have one special request: two blue Solo cups filled with ice, and a bottle of whiskey. Just because these Southern boys eat clean doesn't mean they're not going to let loose on a Saturday night, after all.
