Counties finalize March 5 election results in Y-S

Mar. 28—March 5 presidential primary election results for both Yuba and Sutter counties were essentially finalized after final ballot tallies were released Wednesday night for races in Yuba County.

Along with contested supervisor and water agency races, several school bond measures were on the ballot to help fund facilities improvements and additions sought by area school districts. According to final results from both counties, all bond measures that needed to meet the 55% approval threshold failed.

With all county supervisor races now decided, residents in both Yuba County and Sutter County will have new representatives. Renick House will be the new Yuba County District 2 Supervisor after beating incumbent Don Blaser. Jeff Boone will take over as Sutter County District 1 Supervisor after beating incumbent Nick Micheli and Jeff Stephens will be the new Sutter County District 5 Supervisor after beating incumbent Mat Conant and challenger Sarb Thiara.

In Sutter County, Clerk-Recorder Donna Johnston said election results in the county were certified on March 20. Yuba County Clerk-Recorder Donna Hillegass said election results for the county will be certified Friday.

Mirroring a pattern throughout the state, voter turnout in both counties was rather low. In Sutter County, 20,811 out of 52,572 registered voters participated in the March 5 election. In Yuba County, 15,187 out of 42,002 registered voters participated.

Of the voters who submitted ballots for the election, in Yuba County, 13,253 voted by mail. In Sutter County, 19,747 voters submitted a mail-in ballot.

Local contested races and measures

Every school bond measure up for consideration in both Yuba and Sutter counties failed. While some garnered a majority of the vote, several fell just short of the needed 55% mark for full passage.

Plumas Lake Elementary School District's Measures V, W, and X all received majority support, but failed to pass. Measure V received 53.85% of the yes vote, Measure W had 54.14% voting yes, and Measure X had 53.17% voting yes.

The three separate measures, totalling $54 million, could have funded a new middle school to address growth and overcrowding in the district.

Wheatland Union High School District had two bond measures on the ballot — Measure T and Measure U. Measure T, a $20 million bond that would have aided the district in building a new Plumas Lake high school, had 54.65% voting in favor. Measure U, a $8.7 million bond that would have allowed the district to renovate some school facilities and make safety and security improvements, had 57.48% voting no.

Measure S, Marysville Joint Unified School District's $97-million bond proposal that would have funded a new middle school serving south Yuba County and various facilities improvements to help reduce school overcrowding, failed with 62.58% voting no.

The only school bond measure in Sutter County, Measure B, failed with 53.27% voting yes. Sutter Union High School District was pursuing the $13.8 million bond measure to fund a number of modernization projects including the Sutter Union High School football stadium and athletic facilities as well as new classrooms.

The race for Yuba Water Agency Director North Division will see a runoff in November because neither candidate in the three-way race received 50% plus one of the vote. Incumbent Charlie Mathews, who received 48.82% of the vote, will face off in November against former Yuba County Supervisor Randy Fletcher, who received 34.09% of the vote.
