Will council members change their votes to reappoint C.J. Davis?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Mayor Paul Young announced that he intends to reappoint C.J. Davis, even after a motion to do so failed in January.

Some city council members may still disagree with the move.

For months the word “interim” has been attached to Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis’ title. Mayor Paul Young says he intends to change that after budget season by reappointing her.

Back in January, a motion to reappoint Davis failed 6-7. WREG reached out to all seven members who previously voted against Davis to see where they stand today.

Jerri Green was one of the council members who voted ‘No’ during the motion to reappoint Davis.

“The problems we seen at the start of the year are still problems. Our homicide numbers are still breaking records. My latest report from the police department is that we have about 142 as of today,” said Green.

Green says it was ‘No’ then, and it’s ‘No’ now.

“I’m here for somebody that will make Memphis successful and be truthful with the council,” she said.

Green mentioned recent tragedies like a mass shooting in Orange Mound where nine people were shot and two people were killed.

Plus, an officer-involved shooting that left an MPD officer and an 18-year-old dead.

“Crime is still the number one issue in my district and city. We haven’t seen a real plan. We haven’t seen any change,” said Green.

In a statement to WREG, J.B. Smiley said, “I know public safety and crime are top of mind for everyone. I am committed to listening to the citizens of Memphis in hopes that there is a consensus around which direction we should take.”

We have not heard back from council members Carlisle, Spinosa, Swearengen-Washington, or Warren.
