‘Couldn’t believe it’: Local man discovers $1M winner in stack of old lottery tickets

MEDINA, Ohio (WJW) — There are those who immediately check to see if their lottery tickets are big winners and others with the patience of a saint.

One Medina man is clearly the latter as he — with only 26 days to spare — recently learned one Mega Millions ticket gathering dust in his home was actually worth $1 million.

Woman’s forgotten lottery ticket wins $135K

Michael (last name withheld) told the Ohio Lottery he was about to throw out a stack of old lottery tickets when he decided to go through them and double-check if any were winners.

That’s when he learned a ticket he’d purchased on Oct. 10 at North Court Beverage in Medina was worth a great deal of money. He made the discovery in the nick of time, too, as the ticket was set to expire within the month.

“I couldn’t believe it, just one of those things you don’t think is real,” Michael told the Ohio Lottery. “My wife was working so the only one I could tell was the dog.”

The Ohio Lottery said the man and his wife have not yet decided what they’ll do with the money ($720,000 after taxes).

Meanwhile, the Mega Millions jackpot just keeps going up and is sitting at $792 million.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot … well, we’re not sure you want to know the odds. Nonetheless, best of luck to all. If no one wins on Friday, the next drawing is on Tuesday at 11 p.m.
