Could a Live-Action Star Wars TV Show Be Coming?

We already know that Star Wars is coming back to the big screen after Disney's purchase of LucasFilm, but the franchise might also be coming to the small screen. James Hibberd reported that Paul Lee, entertainment president at ABC (a Disney subsidiary) told Entertainment Weekly that the network is "going to look" at a long-in-the-works live-action Star Wars TV series.

"We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet," Lee said. "We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation."

The idea for a live-action Star Wars has been on the table for some years, Hibberd explained. Fifty scripts were produced as were "extensive art work including character designs, costume designs, and set designs."

But we wouldn't get too worked up over this news. Hibberd wrote that, with the new movie planned "cautious brand managers" might not want a TV show airing. And even Lee is not speaking in certainties: "It’s going to be very much up to the Lucasfilm brands how they want to play it."

The Disney purchase of LucasFilm in late October drew criticism from fans of the franchise. Disney has since hired familiar faces to write new film versions, and is now actively looking at directors. The animated Star Wars: Clone Wars ran from 2003-2005.
