True Falcons fans that are native to Georgia and the surrounding area may be excited about having the big game in their city, but what about the team’s actually IN the game? There hasn’t been a hometown champion in the history of the Super Bowl, but what is the likelihood that the Atlanta Falcons can break this “Super Bowl curse”?

In this case, we are looking out for the future of the franchise. Atlanta has an average age (as of this very moment) of 25.1 years. The coaching staff and GM have made improvements in the last few drafts and they seem to have youth at many major positions. The two notable outliers are in the quarterback and kicker positions, but history shows that veteran leaders (particularly at the QB position) get the job done if given enough weapons.

Now if Atlanta has youth on their side, the biggest remaining questions are with divisional competition and coaching staff.

The NFC south is loaded with young talent at skill positions. Big, athletic quarterbacks in Cam Newton and Jameis Winston are revolutionizing the game and if we’re being honest, they’re tough to game plan for. The division that was a laughing stock just a couple of years ago is back on the rise and should be incredibly competitive for years to come.

When it comes to the coaching staff, we saw Dan Quinn, Kyle Shanahan, and Richard Smith bring the Falcons to an 8-8 season, despite a 5-1 start. They continue to build the roster to best fit the “fast and physical” philosophy and we should find out this season how the coaches have used this offseason and draft to really complete the roster than they inherited.

The Falcons have a lot to prove in the time before 2019 and a good number of variables still exist. However, there seems to be a great deal of optimism within the organization and big things should be in Atlanta’s near future. Not saying we’re going to win a Super Bowl that year, but as Kevin Garnett once said, “Anything is possible”!
