New Costco in northwest Fresno approved by City Council

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Fresno City Council unanimously voted to approve the proposed Costco store in Fresno, to be built on Herndon Avenue and Riverside Drive.

The 7-0 vote came on Thursday. The new store would be more than 200,000 square feet and include a car wash and 32-pump gas station.

Fresno City Council expresses concerns over new Costco

The new Costco will replace the current store on 4500 West Shaw Avenue. Last month, Fresno City Council held off on approving the plans over concerns the store would have on traffic and noise in the area.

In the meeting on Thursday, Costco addressed concerns and provided possible solutions, such as not allowing its trucks to travel down Riverside Drive. The company also said it would repave Riverside Drive with a special rubber concrete mix that would limit the sounds of cars passing by.

“We come a long way from our last meeting,” said Fresno City Councilmember Mike Karbassi. “We had the opportunity, in an exhaustive way, to make an interesting decision in an informative way in the best interest of families at the same time preserving the neighborhood.”

The approval did come with several conditions, such as Costco having to help pay for the building of a four-way stop at west Spruce Avenue and north Hayes Avenue. The company will also have to pay for several high-visibility crosswalks in the surrounding areas and pedestrian islands.

Construction is expected to begin in the fall and is set to be completed by the end of 2025.
