COSI helps elementary students learn about science

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – School districts in central Ohio are trying to get kids more interested in STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

Students in Grove City got to do just that on Thursday morning when COSI and Breezeline, a company that provides broadband internet to Ohio and other states, brought hundreds of learning lunch boxes to an elementary school.

COSI started out by demonstrating how to make a big white cloud with just two simple ingredients, and the kids were amazed.

“I think it was really cool because of the dry ice and the hot water. I never thought of dry ice and hot water coming together,” said third-grader Tilali.

Then they received their learning lunchbox from COSI. It was nature-themed with binoculars for bird watching, supplies for some crafts and projects and much more.

Highland Park Elementary School’s principal Stephanie Baker said it’s inspiring to see kids discover a love for science.

“Science is important for your entire life. It’s the world around us, it’s out in nature, it’s in our classrooms, it’s in our homes,” said Baker. “The sooner you start learning and exploring about science, I think the more opportunities you have in life.”

Tilani and her classmate Aiden said science is one of their favorite subjects in school.

“I like science because it helps us with everyday things,” Tilali said.

“Science lets me help more people and make sure people don’t get sick and stuff,” Aiden said.

And Principal Baker said it is always her goal to expand her students’ minds.

“In the long run I want you to be excited and see opportunities for yourself, whether you choose to go into a career in science or whether it’s just something you do at home,” said Baker.

People with COSI, Breezeline and Highland Park elementary said they hope this gets kids excited about science in both the short and long term. To learn more about COSI’s learning lunch boxes click here.
